Intersex Awareness Week is October 26th-November 1st
There are an estimated 2% of people born with biological intersex traits who are unfortunately often made invisible due to medical erasure and discrimination. Non-consensual surgeries on infants and young children with intersex variations are harmful, with long-term negative physical, emotional, and psychological consequences, and more healthcare providers are advocating for increased education and the delay of unnecessary medical procedures, aligned with the standards of gender-affirming care.
Although intersex is not a sexual orientation or gender identity, there is a history of relatedness and connection between intersex people and the greater LGBTQ+ identities because our communities share similar struggles, such as invasivegender-affirming medical interventions and social stigma, and we find a sense of understanding and community with each other.
As advocates for the LGBTQ+ community, Oasis takes a stance of solidarity and participates in Intersex Awareness Week to commemorate the anniversary of the United States’ first public demonstration led by intersex people and their allies against non-consensual surgeries.
Every year, during Interwex Awareness Week, intersex folks and allies around the world raise visibility for this community and the oppression they face.
This year, intersex people are also under threat from every bill that targets transgender people and the broader LGBTQ+ community. These policies target our existence and threaten to erase us. We openly support members of the intersex community in living authentically and unapologetically! Every person has the human right to health, dignity, and freedom. When intersex people are denied those rights, all human rights are weakened.
In 2025, Intersex Awareness Week is October 26th-November 1st. To participate in Intersex Awareness Week and express your support for intersex people, engage with organizations leading the advocacy for intersex rights, such as interACT.
