Oasis Legal Services in the Central Valley: Introducing Vasmer Vang

Oasis Legal Services in the Central Valley: Introducing Vasmer Vang

In the heart of Fresno, where acceptance isn't always easy to come by, there's a place where diversity, resilience, and support intersect to create a safe haven for LGBTQ+ immigrants. Previously supported by two amazing staff members (Lizette and Juana) with an unwavering commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ asylum seekers, we are thrilled to introduce you to the newest addition to Oasis’ Fresno team, Vasmer Vang.

As a queer, Hmong, non-binary native of Fresno, CA, Vasmer's journey is deeply intertwined with Oasis’ mission. Their personal connection to supporting LGBTQ+ immigrants and people of color in the Central Valley is at the core of what they do.

Mateo Sánchez, Oasis’ Development & Grants Coordinator had the privilege of interviewing Vasmer to get to know them better personally and professionally. Vasmer's story is a testament to the power of authenticity, community, and a profound love for their roots—all while championing legal advocacy in the Central Valley. Read about Vasmer's unique journey and discover what makes them a driving force in the LGBTQ+ asylum seeker community.

MS: Based on your background, it seems like your work is very personal. What can you share about what drew you to work at Oasis?

VV: The work at Oasis aligned with my goals to protect and support LGBTQIA+ refugees in my community and so I was excited to join the team! What drew me to Oasis was the fact that Oasis opened its Fresno office in response to the lack of accessibility of Central Valley clients.

MS: What was it like growing up in Fresno, CA?

VV: It was very spicy (haha). I was a queer Hmong kid in one of the most religious-conservative parts of California so my coming out journey was difficult and traumatic. Luckily, I met powerful Hmong women and queer organizers who called back and rejuvenated my spirit. My community sustains me as I work to make Fresno a safer place for queer immigrants.

MS: When did you know you wanted to be a lawyer?

VV: I first considered law school in undergrad (I originally wanted to be a youth pastor, but a story for another time). I finally committed to apply to law school after meeting my chosen family. Although I love Hmong and queer grassroots organizing, I realized I could make a greater impact in Fresno as an attorney.

MS: I know that you like to cook Hmong family recipes, and being in the Central Valley where there is a large Hmong population, you must be surrounded by great food! What is your favorite Hmong dish?

VV: One of my favorite Hmong recipes is freshly boiled chicken and broth made with traditional Hmong herbs (my Mom adds silken tofu). An interesting fact about this soup is that it is known as “postpartum chicken soup” meant to reinvigorate a new mother’s health after giving birth.

MS: What are you looking forward to in the coming year, either personally, professionally, or both?

VV: Professionally: getting to build stronger relationships with local Central Valley LGBTQIA+ and immigrant-serving organizations. Personal life: introducing my kitty to her first holidays and celebrations!

MS: Lastly, we all want to know - what is your go-to karaoke song?

VV: WAP by Megan and Cardi B!

Vasmer’s background creates a narrative that beautifully interweaves personal passion and professional purpose. Reflecting the essence of Oasis' mission, Vasmer's journey has come full circle as they provide vital legal support to grassroots QTPOC (queer, trans, people of color) organizations in their hometown.

In the coming year, we can expect Vasmer to focus on strengthening partnerships with organizations that share their values, and we look forward to the impact they will create in our community.

Vasmer is not just an addition to our team but a shining example of the support we offer to LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. And if you ever find yourself at a karaoke night in Fresno, be sure to join Vasmer for a dynamic rendition of "WAP!”
