Many LGBTQ+ immigrants grow up being told, either explicitly or through the way they are treated, that they are not worthy of love, often by those who were supposed to keep them safe. Having to build oneself up after experiencing that kind of rejection is a difficult thing to do.
And yet, every day, we witness our clients do this for themselves and each other.
In Fresno, building community is a constant labor of love. When spaces are not created with us in mind, we create our own. Our Central Valley team has fostered a welcoming and supportive environment for those who need it.
On June 6, 2026, Oasis marched in Fresno Pride’s parade, celebrating the power, creativity, and leadership of our LGBTQ+ immigrant community. The most inspiring part were our clients, who created a celebration reflecting who they are as artists, dreamers, and proud members of the community. They selected the theme of ‘Dulce Amor’ (Sweet Love) for our float, transforming a truck into a giant piñata and handing out candy from various cultures around the world.
This year we had the largest number of clients representing Oasis at Pride since we opened our offices in Fresno three years ago. Everyone created such a strong bond through the many preparation sessions leading up to the event, helping them feel safe and supported enough to march amongst their peers and chosen family.
A sweet moment happened while we waited for the parade to begin: The Fresno LGBTQ Youth Group, who was also getting ready to march, came over to say hi to our staff, captivated by the joy in our group. Although they seemed a bit shy at first, our team welcomed them with warmth and we took a photo together to mark the occasion!
During the parade, our community was on full display, with many clients marching for the first time. Onlookers got to witness and experience the joy and community that our clients and staff have cultivated. The parade was a small example of the ongoing loving efforts of maintaining a community of queer and trans immigrants in the Central Valley. In a place where many LGBTQ+ individuals may still feel isolated or invisible, we hope that Oasis’ presence in the parade and in the Central Valley serve as a reminder that they are not alone.
